.     .     .

Still testing out the Petzval – highlights being shots taken at Birmingham’s Ruffner Mountain Park and featuring my favorite subject: my lovely and patient wife.  The two “May Eleven” photographs (which, you’ll notice, were actually taken on May 10… my bad) are not anything special.  I chose to upload them because I was kind of proud of my technique.  That’s no post-processing faded-out filter effect.  Taken on a misty Saturday morning, I enhanced the two images of Lake Martin with the fancy, complicated method of fogging up the lens by breathing on it before snapping the picture.  Wizardry!

Lots of contemplation and self-reflection over the past two weeks, which deserves a post of its own soon.  Otherwise there’s been a lot of office work during the week and a lot of sitting, unshaved and unbathed, lakeside in a bathrobe on the weekends.  I am okay with that trend continuing for a while.

PVP#4: A Tale Of Two Lenses

Some samples from a couple of my desert-island lenses.

These first four shots were taken with what is probably the most expensive glass I own – the remarkable AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.4D IF.  Incredible low-light performance and perfect bokeh with its wide aperture, this is considered by many photographers to be the ultimate portrait lens.  It’s hard to disagree.  This one is responsible for many of my personal favorite photos.  The lens itself is a beast – large and heavy.  It was superseded in 2010 by the newer f/1.4G model, but I somehow found a brand new one so they’re still out there to be had if you dislike the pre-loved route.

These next four were taken with the sublime Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8.  Introduced in 1983, Nikon still makes this manual-focus macro lens today.  Unlike with the 85mm, I opted to take my chances on eBay and buy this one used.  The glass is flawless.  The numbers on the sturdy barrel are a little worn off, but other than that you’d never know it was a previously-used item.  The focus ring on it is gigantic, and contrary to my apprehensions the transition from autofocus to manual was not at all challenging.  I actually enjoy having more control over the image.  Not just for close-ups (though it is a capable macro machine), I find this lens to be a fun portrait and even street-photography lens.  Binding myself to a single telephoto length makes me think more about the shot itself.

So there you have that.  There are other lenses I’ll take with me besides these two (my little manual-focus 28mm comes to mind), but I can’t think of a lens I would chose OVER these two.  For previous purges see here, here and here.
